Dr. Con Gillen PhD

Born in Scotland, Con has degrees from Glasgow University, Aberdeen University and the British Open University. He has taught at the universities of Paisley, Glasgow, Dublin, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and the Open University. He is a member of the Glasgow, Edinburgh, Highland and London geological societies, and has served on the board of several of these; he has Chartered Geologist status of the British Geological Society. Much of his teaching career has been devoted to introducing the geology of Scotland to those new to the subject, from within the UK and abroad. He also leads geological study tours to various parts of Europe, including Iceland, Faeroe, Tenerife and Bulgaria. An accomplished linguist and technical translator, he has compiled a comprehensive Russian-English geological dictionary, and has been working with Russian colleagues on the world’s deepest research borehole in the Kola Peninsula, Arctic Russia. He is presently Director of Lifelong Learning at Edinburgh University.
