If flying to Greece, the nearest airport is Athens. There
are several airlines with direct flights from the UK, including
BA from Heathrow, Easyjet from Luton and Gatwick, and Air
Scotland from Glasgow (check current status). Flights from
Britain take around 3.5 hours. There are also several airlines
offering indirect flights from various UK airports to Athens
via a change-over in another country, such as Alitalia via
Milan, Czech Airlines via Prague, KLM via Amsterdam, German
Wings via Cologne. Some airlines offer separate, reasonably
priced outward and return journeys if preferred (eg Easyjet).
Others may offer seperate journey bookings but levy a high
premium if a return journey is not included, so check this
carefully (eg Alitalia, Czech Airlines, etc).
Transfer from the airport to the island of Evia can be done
reasonably cheaply by public transport: train to Athens centre
(about one hour), bus to ferry at Agia Marina (about 1.5 hours),
ferry to Nea Styra, Evia (45 minutes). Generally speaking,
this connection requires a flight arriving by early afternoon
or a stay in Athens on the night before traveling to Evia.
Please note that bus and ferry times vary considerably throughout
the year; once booked onto a course we will provide full information
on transport options and timings.
Alternatively, taxis are readily available from the airport
to the ferry; at a cost of around €45 one way. We can
book this for you, and, if possible, can put you in touch
with other participants arriving at the airport so you can
share a taxi. Once landed in Evia, you will need to budget
for a taxi from the ferry to the Centre in Zarakes village
(this takes about 30 minutes and costs around €15).
Those who prefer the flexibility of having their own transport
can arrange car hire from one of the outlets at Athens airport,
or from a city centre company who may arrange for you to collect
the car near the airport. Those with their own transport can
take advantage of the other ferry connections (Oropos on the
mainland north of Athens to Eretria in Evia; Rafina on the
mainland west of Athens to Marmari in Evia), or the bridge
linking Evia to the mainland at Halkida. The drive from the
airport to the Zarka Centre via the bridge takes around two
and a half hours.
For those without their own transport, once at the Centre,
if you wish to visit nearby beauty spots, towns or beaches
(in addition to our free excursion), you may like to get together
with other guests to share a local taxi. We also have a small
number of mountain bikes for the use of guests.
Before booking your travel, you will need to know for sure
that the course has sufficient numbers to make it viable.
We encourage early booking by offering a discount and will
confirm (at the latest) two months in advance if the course
is going ahead. We advise you to wait for confirmation from
us before booking your travel.
